Conscious Tourism is not just to dispose garbage in adequate places or not to remove plants of the forest. 21/12/2009 :: Ecological Christmas - Part3

VieDecor shows the third and last part of the series of hints for a more Ecological Christmas. Preparing the Christmas Dinner:

Buy just the necessary to the Christmas dinner and the New Year’s party and avoid the excessive use of food and alcoholic drinks.

Choose organic ingredients, from the season, avoiding canned food, imported products and excessive packages.

Avoid disposable material, like plates, glasses, cutlery and table clothes which seem more praticle, but polute the environment.

Paper towel and paper napkins are whitened with chlorine, which discharges carcinogen gas during their production – prefer those made of fabric: washable and much more elegant.

Remember that nowadays it’s possible to rent anything for low prices. And, at least in Brazil, you don’t even have to wash the fabrics before giving them back.

07/12/2009 :: Ecological Christmas - Part 2 - Preparing the Decoration

VieDecor shows some new hints on trying to reduce the impact of our comemorations on the environment

Choose artificial trees or dead branches, or buy a plant with roots in the case you have a place to plant it after Christmas.
If it’s important to use lights, choose lamps that require low energy.
Create ornaments by recycling materials that you have in your house. Some ideas: Rings made with coloured magazines, connected in order to produce a strip, can substitute garlands. Stars, bells or angels can be made of tetrapack boxes: cut each piece twice, glue one part to the other, leaving just the silver part appearing, make an orifice and hang it on. Use that figures to decorate courtains and windows. Recycle old balls (not made of glass) using fabric pieces, hope, seeds, buttons or other materials. Dead leaves (vine, platano, holly) can be collected during the Autumn and painted.

17/11/2009 :: Ecological Christmas

Trying to rescue the real meaning of Christmas, union among people, we can diminish consumption and waste to tranform this date in a moment of happiness and shelter but without forgeting to reflect about the future of our planet.

In this manner, VieDecor shows hints to a more Ecological Christmas, to present ourselves and every world citzen with reduction of impact of our comemorations in environment.

Part 1 – Buying gifts:

Preparing a list with names and interests, we move fast shopping and take away waste.

Spend by your possibilities; not running into debt allows you to be more sensible and, thus, more sustainable.

Favour ideas about usable and durable gifts or gifts more simbolic than material.

Tickets for movies, plays, shows, hotels, stuff in a beauty parlor or gift token from stores are interesting examples and it’s not necessary to pack.

Acquire regional products.

Pay attention to ingredients of composition and origin.

Choose handcraft products with little environmental impact.

For perfumary or cosmetics, choose companies engaged with ecology subjects and that don’t make tests in animals.

For children, select educational toys and/or that don’t use batteries.

Make gifts by yourself: in the kitchen, coockies, breads or Christmas cakes; in the garden, new seedlings of reproduced plants in spring can be offered in beautiful vases and if somebody likes to prepare handcraft, the possibilities are infinite.

Refuse excessive packages or non-recyclable materials.

Prepare packages with recyclable materials, like used packages, used paper, PET, etc and don’t forget to save the packages received this year to use in the next Christimas.

Donate what you don’t use, providing a better Christmas to poor people.

(And expect! Soon we will send the Part 2)

26/10/2009 :: Some plants are not so inoccent like them seem

Toxic plants are closer than we can imagine.

More than 200 species that are used like ornamental are toxic to men and animals.

Exuberant and diverse flowers, perfumes and colors, are the biggest attractions in those dangerous plants.

Obviously children are the most common victims of intoxication, by contact and, mainly, intake.

Preventing , the best to learn how to identify those plants, keep them distant of children and animals and teach them that should never play with plants. The use of unknown plants, even after cooking, can be dangerous.

If somebody eats these kinds of plants, it’s necessary to look for an Emergency Hospital (in Porto Alegre: Pronto Socorro Municipal), with parts of the plant used to identification and prescription of ideal treatment.

In gardening, it’s good to use gloves.

Species like oleander (Nerium oleander), foxgloves (Digitalis purpurea) and brugmansia (Datura suaveolens) can cause cardiac disturbs and death.

Some other species of toxic plants very common in our gardens are: allamanda (Allamanda cathartica), flamingo flower (Anthurrium sp.), aveloz (Euphorbia tirucalli), rhododendron (Rhododendron sp.), euphorbia (Euphorbia pulcherrima), caladium (Caladium bicolor), dumb cane (Dieffenbachia picta), calla lily (Zantedeschia aethiopica), Crown of Thorns (Euphorbia milii), frui salad plant (Monstera deliciosa), snake plant (Sansevieria trifasciata), Climbing Ficus hera (Ficus pumilla), mophead (Hydrangea macrophylla) and fern leaf (Pteridium aquilinum).

17/09/2009 :: Waiting spring time with flowers in the house

Almost all kinds of flowers are sold during the whole year. The difference is the quantity offered and, of course, the price.

The main Spring flowers are: alstroemeria, agapanthus , aster, snapdragon, sea lavender, carnation, cala lily, freesia, gerbera, gipbsofila, sunflower, gladiolus, heliconia, iris, lillium, lisianthus, narcissus, orchidea, rose, wheat, tulip, violet.

When buying, always choose flowers in good conditions; with firm and green stems, without faded parts or spots. Never buy faded flowers, because this kind of material is highly unlikely to become good-looking again.

Put flowers as fast as possible in water, after removing exceding leaves and cutting the base of the stems twice or 3 times inside the water. Leaves left in the water putrefy quickly producing bad smell and injuring the stems. The scissors should be sharp not to crush the stems.

For renewing the arrangements, you should change the water daily and cut the stems each two or three days, taking off the rotten parts and, therefore, improving the water absorption.

Has anybody seen a real raspberry or just know candies of it? And fissalis, do you know what is this? Hibiscus, Indian cress, lulo, climbing spinash, yacon potato, did you taste?

We are talking about Non-Conventional Food Plants (NCFP), plants that you don’t probably find in supermarkets, but that are produced near than you can imagine: in Porto Alegre! Besides that plants are extremely nutritious, tasty and developed by organic proceedings of growing.

The organic food is more than a product without pesticides: it is a result of agricultural process of production that intend to use the soil and other natural resources in equilibrated way.

If you want to know and to obtain this kind of products and other more “conventional”, directely from producers, you should go to the Ecological Market of “Brick da Redenção” that happens all Saturdays morning. It’s a good surprise the quality and the cheap price.

For the people more interested about that subjects, the projet “Caminhos Rurais” (rural ways) invites to beautiful walk in the rural places of south of Porto Alegre. That project demands to grow the conscience of society about the importance of turism in rural areas as part of social and economic growth, creation of occupation and gains and the increase of life quality of rural people, preservation and conservation of natural and cultural patrimony.

This is our hint to winter’s vacation. You will be enchantd!
